Jared Hughes

ROME, GA - Rome High School is thrilled to announce the appointment of Jared Hughes as the new head coach of Lady Wolves basketball. Coach Hughes returns to Rome High from Berry College.

Coach Hughes has played an integral role in building a strong basketball foundation in Rome, beginning with his involvement in the Rome-Floyd YMCA's youth program and most recently to local colleges. His recent experience, as an assistant under Coach Thomas Johnson at Berry College in the NCAA Division III Southern Athletic Association (SAA), showcased his ability to develop players and foster a culture of excellence.

During his time at Berry College, Coach Hughes contributed to the development of six All-SAA conference players, including the 2022 SAA Defensive Player of the Year. Eight of Coach Hughes’ team members made the All-SAA Honor Roll. Notably, the team achieved national recognition for their tenacious defense, finishing 11th in scoring defense, 4th in three-point defense, 10th in turnovers forced, and 21st in turnover margin in the NCAA.

Prior to his tenure at Berry College, Coach Hughes served as the head coach at Shorter University, competing in the highly-competitive Gulf South Conference in NCAA Division II. Overcoming immense challenges, he led the team to break a 34-game conference losing streak and helped a player become the NCAA's 10th leading scorer. His leadership also resulted in five Conference Player of the Week awards, one All-GSC selection, and 21 members of the GSC Honor Roll.

Coach Hughes' impact extends beyond college basketball, as he has seven years of experience with the Georgia High School Association. His accolades as a high school coach include being named the Northwest Georgia Tip-Off-Club Coach of the Month in 2016 and being selected as a North Georgia Tip-Off Club All-Star coach. Under his guidance, his teams have competed for two region championships and achieved notable milestones, including setting a school record of 100 points in a single game and reaching the Elite 8 in the playoffs.

The Rome High School community eagerly anticipates Coach Hughes' return to lead the Lady Wolves. With his extensive experience, proven success, and passion for developing student-athletes, there is no doubt that the Lady Wolves basketball program will continue to thrive under his guidance.
