Superintendents Student Advisory Council Meeting

Safety, bullying, project-based learning, and more were topics of conversation for the first meeting of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council in September.

The group consisting of students from Rome Middle and Rome High Schools met at the College and Career Academy at Rome High School to discuss numerous times with Superintendent Dr. Eric L. Holland.

Several students mentioned safety as a concern following the incidents at Apalachee High School.

“Not a single day goes by that we don’t talk about safety, preach about the need for safety, and talk about safety,” Dr. Holland said. “Safety is all about teamwork. We need your help too. We want you to study so you can know what a precautionary lockdown means and share that with others. We want you to be an extension of our safety plan and hopefully, you can help us provide more safety solutions.”

Students also talked about wanting to get more information about clubs and how to join as well as a hope to be able to do more project-based learning in classes.

The council meets several times a year and helps students bring the needs and concerns they see to the forefront.

Dr. Holland also reminded the council of the role they play in the communication chain.

“Everyone here in this room is the voice for the voiceless. You’re not in here just to get a nice polo. We also need this information to cascade back to all of our classes,” he said. “We want you to meet with the class presidents so they can help communicate this and also have conversations with the principals, so they can hear the concerns.”
