Rome City Schools was thrilled to partner with OLA Language School to host a recognition program for RCS parents who completed a full year of OLA English classes. These English classes were made possible through the use of federal family engagement funds.
On Thursday, May 4, the honorees and their families enjoyed a special evening of recognition and celebration at the College and Career Academy that included testimonials from their fellow students as well as words of praise and empowerment from Rome City Schools' Superintendent Dr. Eric Holland, Rome City Schools' Director of Federal Programs Dr. Leslie Dixon, OLA Program Director William Carvajal, and OLA teacher Charlynn Baldwin. The joy and sense of accomplishment of these parents were very evident as they celebrated with their loved ones and enjoyed some congratulatory cake and gift bags.
Dr. Dixon said that she is proud of the 35 parents who were recognized for completing a full year of English classes. “We are very excited to partner with OLA Language School to provide free English classes for our parents,” Dixon said. “Our goal is for parents to become proficient in English to be able to communicate with their children's teachers, help their children with their schoolwork, help them advance at their jobs, and navigate daily life. We are so happy to see that our hardworking parents have accomplished those goals! We are so proud of the parents who sacrificed two hours every week for a year to step out of their comfort zones in order to improve their communication skills. They have shown commitment and courage, and we are so happy for them to continue learning and growing alongside their children."
